When anyone comes across our brand, they are intrigued by the name, so we recon it's best to start our story from there. The name SVOSVA pronounced ( sh'vo - sh'va ) is shona for "try me and you will see". Shona is the native language of Zimbabwe which is where we are originally from and is where a lot of the inspiration behind the concept of the brand comes from.
Along with the name our logo is also inspired by our heritage. In our culture, each family has a totem. A totem is an animal that is believed to have spiritual significance by a society. With that in mind, we wanted our logo to represent our totem which is the Eland. We came up with the logo following a trip to Namibia, where we were inspired by the decor of the hotel we stayed in. The hotel had a statue of a mirrored Eland and from that we came up with the final drawing of our logo. You find this logo in our packaging and our hang tags.
It all started when we (a brother and sister duo) were experimenting with bleach and an old black t-shirt. We found that it created an orange effect and when we posted it on our personal social media platforms. People expressed an interested in buying our bleached t-shirts and we realised we were onto something. With no clear direction at the time we thought we need to come up with a name so we can start market these T-shirts. We happened to glance down at a letter to my dad whilst brainstorming and we realised that is middle name was quite cool and that is how Svosva was born. Svosva has taken many turns before arriving at this point. When we first started building Svosva, we found that the resources were limited when it came to small clothing brands. The resources were so scarce that we learnt how to produce the clothing ourselves with our heat press and sewing machine. In the early stages, this allowed us to participate in events that have shaped our growth and given us well needed confidence. So far we have participated in a small fashion show in London, a pop up shop called Table Bay and exhibited at a Kent Business Event. We also recently went to Paris and showcased in a Concept Store for one week near the Eiffel Tower. We were also in the April Issue of GQ Magazine.
Svosva is influenced by minimalism, dark plain colours and a pop of orange. The orange originates from those bleached t-shirts and still resonated with the brand today. We wanted to create ready-to-wear that is timeless and stands the test of time. SVOSVA is a contemporary streetwear brand with ready-to-wear engineered to last. All materials are meticulously scrutinised for optimal longevity.
When people see Svosva we want them to think Culture, Power and Luxury Style. Culture is represented by the heritage and deep meaning behind the brand. Power is represented by empowering the next generation on multiple different levels. Luxury Style is how the brand comes together in the form of branding and the final clothing item a customer receives.
